Karl Maersch is the founder and President of West Four IP. Karl is a registered patent attorney and started his career as a patent litigator at Jones Day. He then was Associate General Counsel at Eastman Kodak Company where he managed a team that supported the company’s intellectual property functions, including M&A, patent licensing, patent sales, patent litigation, and brand licensing. During his time at Kodak, his team generated over $1.9B in revenue from IP. After Kodak, Karl joined Dow Chemical as the head of IP litigation worldwide. As a result of projects during his time in that role, the company made over $550M in revenue from its intellectual property as well as obtained an order from the ITC excluding a competitor’s product that infringed the company’s trade secrets for 25 years, which is believed to be the longest exclusion order in the history of the ITC.
Terry O’Toole is Vice President of Technology for West Four and heads the technical and project management functions. Terry has over 15 years of experience in all aspects of the patent life cycle and patent monetization, along with over 25 years of R&D experience. Terry is a former IP Manager in Eastman Kodak’s intellectual property licensing operations group and worked with numerous Kodak business units to generate meaningful IP protection. After leaving Kodak, Terry worked at Orthogonal, Inc. where he developed and executed an aggressive IP strategy that quickly established a strong patent position for this tech start-up. Terry has provided IP management, monetization and technical support to both start-up and established companies in a wide variety of technologies including materials science, displays, touch screens, electronics, microelectronics, energy storage, bioelectronics, food products and medical devices. Terry has a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry and is an inventor on 45 issued U.S. patents.
Eric Hurwitz heads the transactional function of West Four IP. Eric has significant experience in intellectual property investment, valuation, licensing and monetization. Eric has lead hundreds of strategic transactions including brand licensing, patent licensing, trademark licensing, and sales & distribution partnerships. Prior to joining West Four IP, Eric founded The License Bureau, a patent and brand licensing agency with a diverse set of clients including NASA Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, American Express, Warner Music Group and Miss America. Eric is also CEO of Mensch Capital, which provides investments in intellectual property assets. Eric has a BA from Ohio State and an MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University.
Michael Stovsky is on the management team at West Four IP and is also a Partner at Benesch, an AmLaw 200 law firm. At Benesch, Mike is a member of the Executive Committee and Chair of the IP and Technology Practice Group. He led the transformation of the group to include comprehensive technology transactions and global data security and privacy and grew it from 7 to over 30 professionals. Mike has significant experience in the representation of companies from start-up to Fortune 100 in technology deals, intellectual property, data security and data privacy (including blockchain), M&A, corporate and securities matters. Mike also has experience with technology procurement, intellectual property licensing, systems implementations, technology transfer, intellectual property counseling, intellectual property commercialization and monetization, and due diligence. Mike is Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US).
